In 2015 I had a heart attack. A healthy, fit 39 year old with a 2 year old son and a 5 year old daughter, I had a heart attack while playing indoor netball. I was lucky – after initially being dismissed, the hospital & cardiologists took my symptoms seriously and with my situation worsening they prevented a dreaded second heart attack.
Since then, I’ve heard many, many stories like mine from young, healthy people (mostly women) with no cholesterol, no weight issues, no family history of heart attack and in many cases no warning signs – like Viv who was in her early 40s & swimming with friends when she had a SCAD Heart Attack; or Neil who collapsed from a heart attack while out with his two young sons; or Jackie who was a healthy, fit 52 year old woman who had a SCAD while running; or Nic who was a fit and healthy woman in her early 30s with a toddler when she had a SCAD heart attack while jogging.
It’s time to change the way we talk about heart attacks in Australia… SCAD is the #1 cause of Heart Attack in women under 50, the #1 cause of heart attack in pregnant women and new Mums, and a very real cause of heart attack in fit, healthy men. We’re on a mission to raise awareness that healthy adults can have heart attacks too; to push doctors and hospitals to take women’s heart symptoms seriously; and to raise much needed research funds to change the story for the next generation.
Join us to help raise awareness and much needed funds for SCAD Research – together we CAN beat SCAD!
